# Universal Page is closing

**If you have LYX staked with us, or active offers on our marketplace, please read this.** Your funds and assets are safe, but some of them need action from you.

- **Staked LYX:** we already started unstaking for you. You still have to **claim** it at [universal.page/vault](https://universal.page/vault). Expect this to take up to two months because of the queue.
- **Active marketplace offers:** cancel them at [universal.page/activity/orders](https://universal.page/activity/orders). You have until **August 10th** while the interface still works properly.
- **Drop creators:** withdraw any mint funds sitting in your drop contract before **August 10th**.

We started Universal Page with a lot of passion and drive: build great tools around Universal Profiles and the new NFT standards, and give creators and collectors a better home. The first line of code was written at the end of 2021, during LUKSO's first hackathon. Since then the journey has been challenging, full of obstacles and disappointments, but also excitement and a lot of learning.

After many delays, Mainnet finally launched, and we pushed our platform live in January 2024. That first month was hectic and honestly magical. Revenue came in, the community buzzed, and it felt like the patience and the late nights were about to pay off.

Momentum slipped away just as fast. The LYX price trended down, volume dried up, the community shrank, and a lot of people lost faith in the ecosystem. We kept going and kept building. Every new feature and improvement to the launchpad, the marketplace, the tools, the staking vault made us proud, and none of it moved the needle.

So we tried to expand. We bridged to Base, hoping fresh eyes would fall in love with these standards and with what we built. Nobody cared. Hundreds of hours gone.

Meanwhile the bills kept arriving. Vault fees kept shrinking because LYX kept losing value. Marketplace fees only matter with high volume and healthy prices, and we had neither. No marketing budget. LUKSO's own traction never materialised. We tried. The numbers don't lie, and they said it's time to stop.

This post was written months ago. It didn't go out then because Fabian and the LUKSO foundation stepped in and supported us. That bought Universal Page a lot of extra life, and you got to keep using what we built, far longer than our own numbers justified. They have supported us throughout this journey, and we want to thank them for everything.

Unfortunately, it has come to a point that we had to face reality and make the hard decision to shut Universal Page down. We want to do this properly. Below is exactly what happens, and what we need from you.

## Your staked LYX

**We have already started the unstaking process for every validator.** You do not need to do this yourself.

What you do need to do, once the validators are unstaked, is **claim**. Go to [universal.page/vault](https://universal.page/vault) and claim your LYX with a single transaction. It will not arrive in your account automatically unless you do this. If you never claim, it never lands.

**This will take a while.** Because every validator is exiting at once, the queue is long. Our current estimate is **up to two months** before everything has finished unstaking. Nothing is wrong if your LYX isn't ready to claim yet. Check the vault page every so often, and claim as soon as there is some available. Please be patient with this.

Every token comes back. It just takes time and one transaction from you.

We are doing everything we can to keep the servers running until the last validator has exited.

## The marketplace

**Until August 10th, everything will still work as normal.**

After that we're shutting down the marketplace indexer to cut costs. Killing some services like the indexer is what lets us keep the vault and the nodes running long enough for everyone to get their LYX out.

**If you have active offers, cancel them now.** Click your profile, go to My Activity, then the "Offers placed" tab: [universal.page/activity/orders](https://universal.page/activity/orders).

Once the indexer is off, the interface will drift out of sync with the chain. Pages may still load. What the interface shows may be outdated. Cancelling should technically still work, because the transaction goes straight to the chain, but the UI around it will likely be broken. Don't rely on what the UI shows. The chain is the truth, the interface is just a window onto it, and that window is closing soon.

## If you launched a drop with our launchpad

Your Universal Profile owns the collection. Our interface disappears, your keys don't. That part is safe.

But: **if there are still mint proceeds sitting in your drop contract, withdraw them now.** Go to the drop editor and clear the balance out. You remain the owner of that contract forever, but our interface is the easy way to reach those funds, and it's going away. Do it while it's still one click.

## If you own NFTs bought or minted through us

Nothing is at risk and nothing is needed from you. Your Universal Profile owns your assets, not us. You can keep using them through Universal Everything or any other LSP compatible interface. Remember: you own your Universal Profile and your assets, Universal Page is just the interface.

Hey everyone,

We've got some important news to share: Universal Page will no longer support the Base blockchain. This wasn't an easy decision, but we believe it's the right one for us, and we want to be open and honest about why we're making this move.

### Why We Chose Base in the First Place

When we first integrated Base, we were thrilled about the possibilities. We thought that by adding support for another blockchain, we'd make Universal Page more accessible and attract more creators. We envisioned artists minting NFTs 2.0, engaging with a broader ecosystem, and effortlessly moving between LUKSO and Base. We put a lot of time and effort into making this happen—making NFTs 2.0 backwards compatible, building tools for cross-chain Universal Profiles, and creating smooth pathways between Base and LUKSO.

### The Challenges We Encountered

**1. Competing with Base's Smart Wallet**

Not long after we started working on Base, they launched their own Smart Wallet. In many ways, their Smart Wallet directly competes with Universal Profiles, which put us in a tricky spot. We tried to make it work by integrating their Smart Wallet as a controller for a Universal Profile, but we kept the profiles at the heart of our platform. Meaning you still make the transactions with your profile, need funds in your profile to make transactions, and receive the assets in your profile.

But even with these adjustments, it felt like Base wasn't fully behind us. They seemed more interested in projects that put the Smart Wallet front and center. This made the promotional plans fall flat, and we didn't get the visibility we were hoping for in the Base ecosystem.

**2. Lack of Promotional Support**

One big reason we went for Base was to get more exposure. They promised to help promote us with shoutouts and social media posts. But after we launched, those promises didn't come through. It seemed like they preferred to spotlight projects that just focused on using the Smart Wallet directly instead of a project that works with Universal Profiles and is also focussed on LUKSO.

**3. The Reality of Being Bootstrapped**

Supporting Base for our platform isn't cheap, and as a bootstrapped company with very limited resources, we have to be smart about where we spend our resources. Without the traction we expected, continuing to support Base just doesn't make financial sense. We need to focus on what's sustainable for us in the long run.

**4. Questions About Alignment and Community**

We also began to question how well Base's ecosystem aligns with our values around decentralization and open community engagement. While they delivered on the technical side, some things felt off. On the surface, it looks like a lot of exciting things are happening on Base. But when we looked closer, we noticed issues like people being banned from Discord without clear reasons, a lack of true decentralization, and a fragmented community that doesn't feel as cohesive as for example the LUKSO community.

It was also challenging to gain traction as a new project in this space. Platforms like Farcaster often felt bot-driven, and despite many builders on Base, much of the activity we saw involved promoting meme coins and simple projects lacking innovation or utility. We acknowledge that there are great things happening on Base, and we respect how they've grown their ecosystem and attracted so many people. However, we felt the reality didn't quite match the initial impression. This disconnect made us rethink whether Base is the right place to build the kind of open, engaged creator community we envision.

### What This Means for Universal Profiles on Base

If you have a Universal Profile on Base, we recommend that you use the next two weeks to transfer any bridged ETH you still have on your profile to a wallet like Coinbase Wallet, Rabby, Metamask, etc.

Starting November 18, we'll remove Base from our user interface, which will make it harder to manage your Universal Profile on Base. As far as we know, there aren't any other platforms supporting Universal Profiles on Base right now. While your assets on IPFS and the blockchain will still be there, you won't be able to access them easily through our platform anymore.

### Looking Ahead

Our infrastructure is still flexible, and we're open to supporting multiple chains in the future if it makes sense. However, we're planning to focus on LUKSO for now and will be removing Base from our platform. We've learned a lot from this experience, but it has also been a great disappointment for us as we really need the community to grow and thrive in order to survive. Hopefully, the LUKSO community can make a comeback and we can continue to build the best platform we can.

# Universal Page Launches on Base: The Social Platform for Digital Collectibles

Following a successful debut on LUKSO earlier this year, the much-praised NFT marketplace is now available on the fastest-growing blockchain in the ecosystem: Base. With a focus on creators, new smart contract standards, and friendly UX, Universal Page aims to make NFTs great again.

Universal Page, or UPage, offers a comprehensive, no-code launchpad for creators to launch NFT 2.0 drops. These new standards, designed by the creators of the ERC-20 standard, aim to make digital collectibles more powerful and allow creators to build up an onchain reputation.

The platform is built solely on top of Universal Profiles, also called smart profiles, onchain profiles, or simply UPs. They are seen as the most powerful account abstraction solution, which not only makes the use of blockchain apps more user-friendly and safer but also more social. Instead of a "wallet," all users on UPage have their on-chain profile. It serves as their wallet to store digital collectibles and the universal identity they can bring from one app to another.

## Expanding to Base

Expanding Universal Page to Base marks a significant milestone, introducing the platform to millions of active users on Ethereum's L2, created by Coinbase. With a huge user base and fast and cheap transactions, this move will improve the user experience further.

The vision of Base is closely aligned with Universal Page's, as both prioritize user experience and focus on creators. UPage offers users gasless transactions. Users can sign up with their email and make transactions on a mobile phone without needing a browser extension or mobile app. Similarly, on Base, this is also achievable through the smart wallet. A smart wallet can be used to manage a Universal Profile, combining these two powerful new account abstraction technologies.

## Multi-Chain Approach

Universal Page empowers users with a multi-chain approach, allowing them to 'replicate' their profile on another chain. This means the Universal Profile can have the same profile address on both chains. Essentially, it's like creating a 'twin' profile on another chain, which allows users to maintain their identity across different chains, giving them full control over their digital identity.
